SUMMARY:Membership Meeting Lunch
DESCRIPTION:The Roseburg Area Chamber’s September 16 membership lunch program will feature a presentation on Measure 118.  Measure 118\, which will be on the November ballot\, would implement a massive new $6.8 Billion tax on sales in Oregon\, driving up costs on even staples like food and medicine for Oregon consumers. It also would make Oregon’s businesses less competitive\, eroding job growth and harming family farms and local businesses across the state.  The Roseburg Area Chamber actively opposes Measure 118. \nIf passed by Oregon voters\, Measure 118 would impose a 3% tax on businesses with gross Oregon sales over $25 million per year. The measure is essentially a gross receipts tax: It would tax sales\, not profits – and businesses would be forced to pay the tax regardless of whether they were making a large profit\, small profit\, or were losing money. \nMeasure 118’s tax would apply at every step in the production and selling process. By the time an Oregon product went from raw materials to a manufacturer to a packaging company to a distributor and then to a retailer\, it might be taxed five times before it finally reached the consumer\, thereby driving up the cost far more than a typical sales tax. \nChamber membership lunches are held from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm at the Douglas County fairgrounds.  Look for more details in future RACC member “Chamber News” emails and the chamber’s September/October Business Perspectives newsletter. \nAdvanced ticket purchase is required.  Online ticket sales only.  Tickets are not sold at the door.  The last day to purchase tickets is September 11 at noon.  \nThe chamber’s September membership lunch program is generously sponsored by CSO Financial\, Inc.

The chamber confirms the attendance of Pacific Green Party candidate Justin Filip and Republican Party candidate Monique DeSpain.  Democrat incumbent Congresswoman Val Hoyle has declined due to a schedule conflict and Libertarian Party candidate Dan Bahlen has been invited\, but not confirmed. \nAttendees will hear directly from the candidates in attendance.  There will also be an opportunity to submit questions to the candidates. The chamber encourages members to come prepared with business-related\, business-relevant questions.  Also\, be prepared to write your questions down. As most of our members are aware\, the chamber will provide notecards on dining tables for attendees to submit questions for consideration. The chamber does not take questions from the floor during candidate forums. \nChamber membership lunches are held from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm at the Douglas County fairgrounds.  Advanced online ticket purchase is required.  Tickets are not sold at the door. Smith’s background is in public policy and communications\, having worked in the Oregon Legislature in various capacities and having served several members of leadership in the House of Representatives. The Garden Valley Corridor Plan (GVCP) will identify strategies for the City to improve safety\, mobility and connectivity so the corridor better serves our community’s needs now and into the future.
